The past week has been a good one. Last week I visited the city cemetery which was definitely an eye opener. It's crazy to see how great of a space there is between rich and poor. At one point of walking through I saw the building where the family which owns many companies in guatemala right beside the slots where poor people are buried. It's quite a difference. As we walked to the end I caught a glimpse of the Guatemala City dump. This is such a sad place and reminded me so much of the dump I visited in Honduras. The Guatemala city dump is the biggest dump in Central America ( I believe ) . It's so sad because so many people live and work there. I have so much, and yet they're living with so little. It was definitely an eye opener to why I am here and why God has put me here.
I went to a great youth church service on saturday night. Although it was in Spanish I tried to understand all that I could and i read all the passages. They were all centred around friendship and how God is there for us.
This week has flown by. I went to Alcance Monday and Tuesday and on Wednesday I went with Kim to a battered womens shelter. It was great. Although i was really quiet and didn't say too much i enjoyed it. I think in the coming weeks i'm going to plan a photoshoot with the women there. do their makeup and hair and take them somewhere beautiful to take photos. If i can give anything i would love to give photos.
On Thursday I passed my 2 month mark of being here in Guatemala. So much has changed since i first got here. Before I wasn't so sure of this place and now i absolutely love it. Guatemala is slowly changing my life, no only in eating habits (I love peanut butter, eat eggs and love Coffee now! WHAT!!!! ) but in everyway possible. This experience is helping me grown up into the person God has planned for me to be. I've been so blessed to live with such an amazing family here and have been so fortunate to have become friends with those around me.
Next week is Semana Santa and it should be quite rowdy here in Guatemala. From sunday to wednesday i'm heading to Xetulul and Xocomil, which are theme parks here in Guatemala. Then on thursday until sunday i believe i am heading off to the east to visit some beautiful places with Chris, the other intern here. I'm quite excited because I haven't done too much traveling here so it will be nice to do some sight seeing on my week off.
Anyways, just thought i'd update.
thank you for the prayers!
love katie
